#birthday30, #onenicething, and Shipwrecks: an Introduction

So! To new years and related endeavors.

Two and a half years ago, I started a group with the idea of putting together and publishing a zine. And I'm finally getting it done. I turn 30 this month, about which I am pretty damned excited, and zine publishing seemed like a good thing to go with as part of the celebration. If you're in the Boise area, look out for the first issue of Shipwrecks.

Additionally, I'm doing that "30 random acts of kindness on your birthday" thing. I'm doing it a little different than the ones I've seen around because I like community and engagement, so I'll be asking others to join me. I will pick 30 not-quite-random acts of kindness (I'm calling them #onenicething instead of a random act of kindness). With each thing I do, I will attach a little card explaining what I'm doing and why and encouraging the recipient to do their own #onenicething and to hashtag it on Twitter and/or Instagram. I'll also be harassing my Facebook and Twitter friends to do #onenicething for my birthday.  I think we sometimes get so overwhelmed and focused on the awful stuff in the world that we forget a) the awesome, amazing, super-kind things that are happening around us every day and b) that we can make our own small difference in our local world without much effort. I'm really excited about. I hope if you read this, you'll join me.
